About the location: Corona del Mar State Beach, Newport Beach (aka Big Corona)
Corona del Mar State Beach is a fairly popular family beach in Newport Beach, Orange County. It runs half a mile long framed by rugged cliffs and a rock jetty that forms the east entrance to Newport Harbor. It has its own feel and is set among flower-named residential streets. All beaches in Orange County are gorgeous, but Big Corona looks like it came right off of a movie set, which isn’t entirely fanciful given that it featured in Gilligan’s Island. Big Corona also held the first major surf competition in mainland USA: the Pacific Coast Surf Riding Championships in 1928, so history is a part of this beach as well. Regardless of how you spend your days in Orange County, it is one of the most magnificent places to catch a sunset.

It never ceases to amaze me how I connect with people these days and most of the time I “meet” people online first. I met Mama M online too. Once I knew we were moving to Orange County, I connected to a Facebook Group for Orange County moms. I remember posting in the group asking about local parenting resources and Mama M was so incredibly helpful and responsive. We had a brief exchange and I soon observed she’s about as selfless and caring as can be. Everyday I see notifications popping up that she is taking time out of her day responding to someone, offering support or pointing them in the right direction, and did I mention she has her hands full: two boys and she’s a working mama. After we connected online, I saw how much she loved her boys and how her family is her world. So I was hoping we would get a chance to meet and explore one of OC’s beaches together.
We planned on meeting at Little Corona but since neither of us had been there before, we ended up meeting at Big Corona instead. It was late in the afternoon (as sessions really need to be in this sunny part of the world) and her boys were excited but, understandably, a little anxious of their surroundings. But that didn't stop us getting some fun images, it simply means we had a more documentary session where I observe what’s going on and do less directing. And we played in the waves and got pretty dirty with sand, so I’d say we won!
